Wegovy Pill vs Foundayo: Oral GLP-1s Compared (2026)
The “needle-free” era of weight-loss medicine has arrived. Two pills are now on the US market, and they work in quite different ways.
The two pills at a glance
| Wegovy pill | Foundayo (orforglipron) | |
|---|---|---|
| Maker | Novo Nordisk | Eli Lilly |
| FDA approval | December 2025 (launched January 2026) | April 1, 2026 |
| Type | Peptide (oral semaglutide) | Non-peptide small molecule |
| Reported weight loss | About 14% at 64 weeks on average in trials; higher among people who completed treatment | About 12% at 72 weeks at the highest dose |
| Taking it | Empty stomach, first thing in the morning | No fasting requirement reported |
Why the molecule matters
Semaglutide is a peptide and normally breaks down in the gut, so turning it into a pill took years of engineering. Orforglipron is a small molecule that survives digestion without that workaround.
Cost
GoodRx lists introductory pricing that starts around $149 per month for certain Wegovy pill doses, rising to about $299 per month for later fills and other doses, with Foundayo also available from about $149 per month. Prices change often, so check current pricing with your pharmacy or insurer.
Side effects
Both are GLP-1 drugs, so gastrointestinal effects dominate. One comparison reported more dropouts from side effects on orforglipron (about 9%) than on semaglutide (about 5%).
Who might prefer which?
That is a decision for patient and prescriber. Convenience, dosing routine, cardiovascular risk and insurance all matter. The Wegovy pill also carries a cardiovascular risk-reduction indication, like the injection.
What’s next
Oral VK2735 and other candidates are in development.
FAQ
Are pills as effective as injections?
